I’ve been thinking a lot lately about two NKU fans in particular.
One of them is Tim Taylor. Just about every time Tim tweets a reply to Norse Report, he ends his tweet with a variation of “if only we got to watch in person this year.” At first I would read that and think to myself “yeah, okay Tim… me too man but what else can we do” before politely responding with a simple “Me too!” But there was something said by another fan recently that made me realize I wasn’t being very fair to people who were making comments like the ones I’ve had Time make…
The last time I posted a discussion thread like this, I was asking why people are less engaged and Mike Hoerlein made a comment I had never really thought of. He said, “…Being at the games, being a part of the section 110 family, being a NKU alum and being a lifelong NKY resident are all things that keep me interested in the Norse. Not being able to go has greatly impacted my feelings on the season. I feel a bit lost without the "live action" and it's weird trying to watch at home alone. Watching at home makes me feel further isolated and a bit depressed therefore it's been an easier choice not to watch… But I need (and my girls need) the friendly smiles, the handshakes, the jokes and laughter at BB&T - we need you and the other fans in person. I need the Gjallarhorn to get my Norse spirits up - and unfortunately, it's not happening this year. :( “.
That has REALLY stuck with me. I never really considered how disconnected people feel this year - and that’s totally on me. I’ve been doing everything I can to try and get people back into the swing of the season, to get people excited about things again. But how do you start a car that ran out of gas? Sometimes you just have to push it along until you get to the gas station. So that’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to keep putting out content, and whenever people are ready, we’ll be excited to have you back. Take all the time you need. Find another hobby. Become an expert at something. Play that video game you’d always wanted to play. But don’t forget when you want to come home, you know where you can find us. We’ll have everything you need to know to get you back in the swing of things ASAP.
So with that, fans, I want to leave with with a question that I hope you’ll answer…
What is it you miss the most about going to NKU games, regardless of the sport?
You can say whatever you want, but I’d encourage you to be specific if you can.
For example: I miss my Section 110 crew and having to give Chet permission to begin the “DAAAAAAAAVID WAAAAAASSSSLER!!!” chant.
Let me know in the comments, and feel free to add a photo that represents what it is you miss the most. The comments are Chronological, so the first person to comment stays at the top!
I think fans feel like they are a part of the team when they create a Home court advantage and that leads to wins. It will be interesting to see the entire NCAA Home team winning percentage this year compared to previous years to see if that is really true. Fans want to support the team and I am sure the team misses fans at Home games and possibly even misses opposing fans on the road games. No fans just makes all games less interesting and more robotic. Even now as some schools are able to have a limited number of fans you can tell the difference between those games and one without fans. One good thing is maybe the pandemic will make fans appreciate the opportunity to attend NKU games in the years to come and BB&T will be packed.
I miss the pre-gaming and visiting the local bars/restaurants before the volleyball games. We also miss the other Norse volleyball parents and fans too!
